Usyd Wireless Setup - Vista

Want to connect to the USYD Wireless connection? Theres a few things you have to do first.

Setup your account
1. Activate your account for VPN

Setup your laptop
2. Setup the VPN Client
3. Setup your Web Browser

Connect
4. Make sure that you've connected to an Access Point
5. Connect your VPN client

Once you've done all of this you'll be connected to USYD's wireless network. Our complete step by step guide is below (or you can download and print off a pdf copy from the quick links menu on the right)

1. Activate your account for VPN

 

The VPN option will need to be added to your UniKey account to allow access to our VPN server. The basic wireless access only allows access to secure university websites only. With the VPN option and the Cisco VPN client, you can gain access to all external sites, such as Google or Hotmail.

1.1. Open Internet Explorer to this address: https://www.auth.usyd.edu.au/extro/options UniKey account Options

1.2. Log in using your UNIKEY username and password.

1.3. Ensure that the “VPN Access” selection box is ticked.
IMPORTANT: No other option needs to be changed! If you change other options, your account may be charged!

1.4. Type in your UniKey password again at the top of the page, then Click on the “Change Options” button to make the changes final.
IMPORTANT: After enabling the VPN option, you might have to wait up to 15-20 mins for it to register on the VPN server. This means you will have to wait 15-20 mins before you can successfully authenticate with the VPN Client.

2. Download and Install the Cisco VPN Client

 

The next step is to download the Cisco VPN client from: http://itassist.usyd.edu.au/staff/support/setup/vpn/ The Cisco VPN client allows your computer to make a secure connection to the internet using your UniKey account.

2.1. Download the Vista compatibile Cisco VPN Client by clicking on the download link vpnclient-win-is-5.0.02.0090-k9.exe

2.2. When the File Download pop up window appears Click Run.

2.3. Then Click Run again.

2.4. The self-extracting exe file will automatically unzip the Cisco VPN client setup files to your machine’s default temp directory and run the Cisco vpn install program.

2.5. Once the Cisco VPN client has been installed it will ask you to restart your machine, select restart my machine later, as we are not finished with the wireless setup.

3. Proxy Settings - Configure your web browser

 

Your proxy settings will determine whether you use your free 6 megabytes of daily internet allowance, or the money on your UniKey account to surf internet. If you use your computer on a network other than the Sydney University’s network, you will need to remove the proxy settings from your web browser. The following instructions are for Internet Explorer only, if you are using another browser you will need to locate the network settings and enter in the proxy settings.

3.1 We have developed a script to make it easier to change your browser settings, alternatively the rest of this section will explain how to setup th proxy settings manually. The proxy switcher script can be downloaded from here. We recommend that you save it to your desktop. Each time you change your location, simply double click on the script and select the required proxy setting. This will automatically configure Internet Explorer's proxy settings. Please see go to on the next step if you have downloaded the script.

3.2 Alternatively you can manually setup the proxy settings. Open Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Once the options appear on screen, select the Connections tab, then Click on the LAN Settings button to enter proxy settings; these settings allow free or paid access to the internet.

3.3 All UniKey accounts are given a small daily allowance of 6 Meg of free cache. To surf the internet free of charge, tick the box marked “Use a proxy server for your LAN”.

3.4 If you run out of free cache you can use the paid cache, if you have money on your UniKey account. The charges are 2c per megabyte for external traffic. To use the paid cache you must have money on your UniKey account and enable the web option at https://www.auth.usyd.edu.au/extro/options

4.5 To change to the paid cache untick all other boxes and tick the box marked “Use automatic configuration script”.

4. Conencting to the Usyd Wireless Access Point

 

If you have already connected to the wireless access point to access this webpage, please go to the next section.

This section will run through on how to connect to the usyd wireless access point by using windows vista as the wireless manager. However a large number of laptops come with their own 3rd party wireless manager. You may connect to the wireless access points with a 3rd party manager. If you have connected to the wireless access point with a 3rd party utility please skip this section.

You will need to have your wireless card installed and turned on. Most laptops require the user to turn the wireless card on by pressing a function on the keyboard or a button on the side of the machine.

4.1. Click on the Start Menu, then click on Connect To

4.2. Wireless networks should now appear if you are in an area within the university that has an access point. The university’s signal names are in the form of usyd-. For example, in Fisher Library (building code: F03), the network listed is “usyd-f03”. Double-click on the signal you want or click Connect.

5. Using the Cisco VPN Client

 

The Cisco VPN provides security by encrypting data to and from your computer, in effect creating a private tunnel through the Internet for your communication. You will need to connect to the Cisco VPN client every time you want to access external webpages on the wireless network.

5.1 You must now if you have not already restarted, beforehand read the rest of the steps in this section.

5.2 The final step now is to start using the Cisco VPN client to access the internet. In most cases, it is accessible via the Start Menu Click on All Programs then Cisco Systems VPN Client and finally the VPN Client.

5.3 Select the Wireless profile by clicking on it and then click on the Connect Icon.

5.4 After clicking on connect the Cisco VPN client should then pop up a window asking for a username and password. Your username will determine your level of access.

5.4.1 For free cache access, just enter in your UniKey username and password. This will allow you access to all websites on port 80. However you will have difficulties accessing any programs that does not run on port 80, such as instant chat programs and email clients.
5.4.2 To access these types of programs simply enter an !10 after your UniKey login (e.g. abcd1234!10). However the free cache will not work and you will have to switch to paid cache to access websites.
