Access Labs Wireless Assistance

Follow the instuctions below to set up your laptop ready to connect to wireless in the Computer Access Labs using our step-by-step Wireless Guide.

Do you have a Windows XP laptop?
If you have Windows XP (SP2) please follow our easy:
Wireless Guide for Windows XP . This guide has been customised for you to setup a connection and shows each step on a Microsoft Windows XP laptop. The Wireless Guide is a pdf file that will open with Acrobat Reader.

Please follow the 5 setup steps below.

Step 1. Check for Compatibility

 

Is your computer compatible with the USYD Wireless Network? Follow the inital step of Configuring your computer

Step 2. Download the VPN Software

 

Download the VPN (Virtual Private Network) Client software by first choosing the file applicable to your operating system:(unikey login required)

  • How do I install it? Once downloaded these instructions explain on How to install on a MAC, and How to install in Windows.
  • How do I use it? Once installed these instructions on How to use VPN on a Mac, and How to use VPN in Windows
  • What Profile do I need to use? Instructions on choosing the preconfigured Profile you need in order to log in via VPN.

Step 3. Proxy Settings (Mac & Windows Operating Systems)

 

To view both USYD websites, and out of the university websites, you will be required to follow some steps to configure your internet browser.

Handy Hint: After you have followed these steps to configure your Internet Explorer browser on a Windows XP (WinXP) computer, you can also download a Internet Explorer configuation file called “proxy-switch” below which you can use to switch between the proxy USYDNet settings more easily through Internet Explorer (6.x).

Important Terms and Conditions of Use: The “proxy-switch” file is Visual Basic script and modifies the Registry Database of your WinXP computer, and changes the settings of your Internet Explorer Browser. If you are unsure about the safety or impact on your computer from using this file on your computer, we suggest that you should not use this “proxy-switch” file and instead manually change the menu settings within Internet Explorer each time you wish to change your Proxy settings. When run, this file switches between the Proxy settings in on Windows XP platform and has a choice between the following options:

  1. Free Access
  2. Paid Access. You need money on your UNIKEY account for this option
  3. Access from a non-university Internet Provider.

If you agree to the terms and conditions above, you can install the “proxy-switch” file (optional step), Right-click and choose Save Target As to download:

  • ProxySwitch-Beta4.vbe Download the Proxy Switch Beta Version 4 Visual Basic (.vbe) file. (optional), then double-click the file to run the program.

This file for use on your WinXP computer using Internet Explorer (6.x). This file has been tested have released the beta version 4 with modifications noted from our testing. Please notify us of any errors you experience with this file for our technical consideration in the next release, to

  • Mac OS X ACL002.pdf (Acrobat Reader) Browser proxy settings for Mac OS X.

Step 4. Printing via Wireless (Optional Step)

 
  • For information on setting your computer up to use access lab printing or your shared drive from wireless please select from the documents below.

  • Macintosh 10.3 acl004.pdf (Acrobat Reader)
  • Macintosh 10.4 acl007.pdf (Acrobat Reader)

Step 5. Where do I go from here? (Wireless Access Points)

 

Fisher Access Lab

Virtually the whole of the Fisher Library is covered by access points including the area adjacent to the entry, and the Fisher Access Centre on Level 2.

Education Access Lab

Education Access Lab in Rooms 232 and 236 are covered by wireless access points, as well as the Foyer on Level 3.

McGrath Access Lab

The McGrath (Carslaw) Access Lab Room 201 is covered by wireless access points and the Eastern Avenue Auditorium Foyer is covered.

Language Access Lab

The Language Access Lab room 211 and 218 is covered by wireless access points and most of the Language Centre in Christopher Brennan Building.

Pharmacy/Bank Building

The Pharmacy Access Lab has wireless access points in the lab.

Link Access Lab

The Link Access Lab has access points located in the lab. Wireless coverage, is also available at the Engineering Library down the Engineering walk. (Near to PNR Building)

Law Access Lab

The Library is completly covered by wireless access points and the Law Access Lab on Level 7 is at good strength.

Cumberland Access Lab

The Library is covered by wireless access points. Strength in the Computer Access Lab is not always strong, but it can still be used in the lab.
