Internet Browsers

You are able to access on-line services and resources using well known internet browsers. ICT recommend and support three in particular, for use at the University:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7
  • Apple Safari 3
  • Mozilla Firefox 3

We support the latest released versions that we have reviewed and confirmed. We will continue supporting those versions during times of transition, when new versions are being progressively deployed.

We do not recommend older versions, because they are not kept up to date with the latest security and operating system patches.

Scenarios for support

  • All new computers sourced from the University's preferred suppliers (Dell, Lenovo or Apple), or computers installed/supported by ICT in access labs & teaching & learning labs, will have at least one of the supported browsers installed. On other computers, you can check which browser you have, and if necessary, download one that we've recommended. That way, our helpdesk will be able to assist you if you have any problems using the browser to access internet sites, University web-pages or other education-specific sites.
  • All three recommended browsers are tested with all ICT-supported solutions & services before implementation. Problems may arise, however, because browser updates and changes can impact various aspects of their operation.

If you find that a web-page doesn’t work correctly with your browser, here’s what you can do:

  • Report the problem to ICT Helpdesk.
  • You have an immediate "workaround" by using an alternate browser, whilst we address the problem.

Here’s what we will do:

  • We will work with suppliers of solutions software to ensure correct operation.
  • We might recommend "workarounds" or alternative procedures.
Sometimes solutions are due for retirement and we will operate them in "maintenance mode", until a replacement solution becomes available. In these circumstances, the problem may not be resolved and a “workaround” will be provided instead.
